Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday (9 June) said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has saved the country from the reign of the plundering, carried out by BNP during its period, leading the country to destruction.

He said the proposed budget for fiscal 2024-25 has been announced to check the looting of the top corrupt, while Sheikh Hasina had saved the nation from the reign of looting that was created during the BNP’s period.

“No one can get relief in the country after carrying out looting,” Quader told a joint meeting organized at the AL Bangabandhu Avenue central office here. The joint meeting was held with the AL central leaders and the presidents and general secretaries of Dhaka North and South City units of AL, its Dhaka district unit and all affiliated organisations.

Speaking at the meeting, the AL general secretary said BNP does not have the courage to ensure punishment for its own people. “Who held the trial of Buet student Soni killing case? And those who awarded death penalty in Abrar killing were all Chattra League men. Was not the trial of Biswajit murder case held? Did BNP hold trial of its any leader during their time?” he questioned.

Claiming that there is no need to make new laws to bringing the corrupt to justice, while it is quite possible to book them with existing laws, Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already vowed that no corrupt would be spared.

About the criticism over giving scopes of whitening black money in the proposed budget, he said BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and its late leader Saifur Rahman whitened black money. This proposed budget has been announced to stop looting by big-shots, he added.

Issuing warning that former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed and former army chief Aziz Ahmed will not be exempted from corruption charges, Quader said they are not AL men, while one was police officer and another was army officer.

“BNP introduced the culture of impunity, but we did not do so,” he added. Regarding the programme of the AL founding anniversary, the AL general secretary said the programmes adopted on the 75th founding anniversary of the AL will be observed from the ward level to national level.

In the morning of June 23, floral tribute will be paid to the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he said.

The AL general secretary said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the event to be held on June 23 next, while a rally will be held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. AL presidium members Jahangir Kabir Nanak, its joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, organising secretaries BM Mozammel Haque, SM Kamal Hossain, Mirza Azam and Sujit Roy Nandi and deputy office secretary Sayem Khan, among others, were present at the meeting.
