Without polls democratic system would not restores: Khasru

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday (19 August) said there is no scope to restore democratic system in the country without elections.

He said this to journalists following a meeting with European Union (EU) acting Ambassador to Bangladesh Bernd Spanier at BNP Chairperson's Gulshan political office here.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Organizing Secretary and International Affairs Committee Member Shama Obaid were present in the meeting.

Amir Khasru said different issues relating to democracy, economy, politics and where future Bangladesh is going following the changeover of the country.

Discussion was also held about how the current crisis can be overcome and in which areas EU's support is needed, he said.

Talks were held about what will be remedies for the state institutions which were destroyed during the Awami regime and how these can be institutions can be brought to right track, said the BNP standing committee member.

Ami Khasru said EU's support in these issues and how EU will continue its support to Bangladesh export business in the EU were discussed.

Discussion was held on how the framework of EU with Bangladesh can be reformed for the economic development of the country and how Bangladesh economy can make a turnaround rapidly, he added.

Replying to a question whether they will seek investigation into financial scam in Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, he said definitely they demand probe into the incident.

Discussion was held not only on Rooppur power plant but also on how the laundered $100 billion can be brought back to Bangladesh, he said.
