Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the BNP, has been acquitted in a sedition case filed in Noakhali. The case, filed by Advocate Omar Faruq, the president of the Subarnachar Upazila unit of the Awami League, ended in Rahman being cleared of all charges by the court.
On Wednesday afternoon (August 21), the Additional District and Sessions Judge of Noakhali, Md. Noman Mahi Uddin, delivered the acquittal verdict. Advocate Rabiul Hasan Palash, Rahman's lawyer, confirmed the news.
According to court sources, on December 15 and 17, 2014, Tarique Rahman, then the Senior Vice-Chairman of the BNP, made several provocative remarks against the government, including labeling Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as a "Razakar" (collaborator), which were later published by various media outlets.
Following these events, on February 28, 2015, Omar Faruq, the president of the Subarnachar Upazila unit of the Awami League, filed a sedition case against Tarique Rahman at Char Jabbar Police Station, case number: 629/20. An arrest warrant was later issued against Rahman in connection with the case.
The prosecution in the case was led by the Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Additional District Judge's Court, Debabrata Chakraborty. The defense was represented by Advocate ABM Zakaria, Vice President of the District BNP, and Advocate Rabiul Hasan Palash, the Organizational Secretary of the Central Committee of Krishak Dal (Chattogram Division).
