Abu Reza Mohammad Nezamuddin Nadwi, a former member of the parliament from Chattogram-15 constituency, was detained by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Sunday.

Abu Reza Mohammad Nezamuddin Nadwi, who had been in hiding since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, was apprehended in Dhaka’s Uttara area. The arrest was confirmed by DMP deputy commissioner for Media and Public Relations, Mohammad Talebur Rahman.

Nadwi, who was previously aligned with the Jamaat-e-Islami before joining the Awami League, faces multiple cases.

BNP leader Md Mostafizur Rahman filed a case on october 9, accusing Nadwi along with 48 others, of orchestrating an attack on a BNP rally in Chattogram's Satkania on November 19, 2023.

The case alleges that Nadwi, alongside his nephew ANM Selim Chowdhury, chairman of the Madarsha Union Parishad, and others, directed an attack on BNP activists. Witnesses reported that firearms, rods, and bamboo sticks were used in the attack, during which shots were fired, and crude bombs were detonated to intimidate protesters. The assault left several BNP leaders and activists injured.

Nadwi’s political career has been marked by controversy. Nadwi was a Jamaat-e-Islami supporter, he became an Awami League candidate and served as MP for Chattogram-15 in 2014 and 2018. However, in the 2024 national election, he lost to an independent candidate.

As chairman of the Allama Fazlullah Foundation Nadwi has also been accused of misusing his position for personal gain. He also allegedly took control of the International Islamic University Chattogram (IIUC).

Nadwi's wife, Rizia Reza Chowdhury, became a central figure in the Awami League’s women's wing, reportedly leveraging her husband’s influence. Nadwi’s late father-in-law, Mominul Haque Chowdhury, was a central leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
