The BNP has called on the interim government to visibly establish law and order in the country, warning that its inability to do so would result in the reemergence of fascist forces.
In a statement sent last night signed by the party's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party said it had observed with deep concern that the ousted "dictatorship and its cronies" had given rise to intense anger and resentment among people through provocative statements.
"As a result, the public's desire to demolish the memories, statues, structures and nameplates of the fallen dictatorship in various parts of the country, including Dhaka, became visible on Wednesday," it said.
Criticising the interim government, it said, "The current interim government has been unsuccessful in taking effective and visible steps in the last six months to bring the fugitive dictator and her accomplices under the law. As a result, the people are encouraged to engage in illegal activities such as taking the law into their own hands."
It said this might tarnish the government's image at home and abroad. It also urged the government to take appropriate steps to check "mob culture", which was resulting in suffering of the masses.
"The administration has not yet been freed from the accomplices of the fallen fascist ruler…In such a situation, it is doubtful whether the government will be able to achieve success in fulfilling the aspirations of the people."
It urged the government to give the highest priority to organising an early election.
"The main mandate of the current government is to organise elections quickly by implementing urgent electoral reforms. However, ignoring the people's aspirations, the interim government itself appears to be more focused on other issues than prioritising this priority," it said.
