Kaspersky warns of a surge in potentially malicious apps posing as VPNs

In Q3 of 2024, Kaspersky experts discovered that the number of users encountering apps that pose as free VPNs increased by 2.5 times compared to Q2 globally. These apps were malware or programs that could be potentially used by malicious actors. This surge has continued into Q4.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) enhances user privacy by hiding IP addresses and enabling access to geo-restricted content. However, cybercriminals exploit free VPN services to create botnets. In May 2024, authorities dismantled 911 S5, a massive botnet involving free VPNs like MaskVPN and ShineVPN. Users unknowingly turned their devices into proxy servers, facilitating cyberattacks, fraud, and money laundering. This botnet spanned 19 million IPs across 190+ countries, making it one of the largest ever. The incident highlights the risks of using free VPNs, which can compromise security instead of providing protection.

To browse securely, Kaspersky recommends using Kaspersky Premium to protect devices and prevent malware, or the free version of Kaspersky VPN Secure Connection for secure traffic with a 300 MB daily limit and no server selection. For enhanced security, Kaspersky Plus and Kaspersky Premium offer premium access to Kaspersky VPN Secure Connection, providing one of the fastest VPNs in the world across all devices and top-rated protection against phishing and other threats, as verified by independent researchers.
