Australia beat New Zealand won the first Test in Wellington by 172 runs on Sunday (3 March), with spinner Nathan Lyon collecting 10 wickets in the match. New Zealand lost their last seven wickets on the fourth morning for 85 runs as they were all out for 196. Lyon took 6-65 in the innings.
New Zealand had started the day on 111-3 chasing a daunting victory target of 369, but Lyon sent back Rachin Ravindra for 59 and also removed Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips inside the first hour to claim his 24th test five-wicket haul.
